Literature References: Antibiotic substances, or complexes of antibiotic substances, which are highly specific, are produced by certain strains of intestinal bacteria, and act upon other related strains: Fredericq, Annu. Rev. Microbiol. 11, 7 (1957). Colicins produced by various strains may differ in many characteristics, the most conspicuous of which are activity spectra and the specificity of resistant mutants.
