Lipotropic Hormone
Title: Lipotropic Hormone
CAS Registry Number: 9035-55-6
CAS Name: Lipotropin
Additional Names: pituitary lipotropic hormone; lipid-mobilizing hormone; adipokinetic hormone; lipolytic hormone; lipotrophin; LPH
Literature References: Hypophyseal hormone which stimulates the release of fatty acids from adipose tissue. b-LPH is a single chain polypeptide containing 89-93 amino acid residues and has been proposed as the biosynthetic precursor for b-MSH and b-endorphin, q.q.v., see M. Chretien et al., Can. J. Biochem. 57, 1111 (1979). g-LPH consists of 58 amino acids and is identical to the sequence of the first 58 residues of b-LPH. Both contain sequences common to ACTH and b-melanotropin, q.q.v. Sequences differ slightly among mammalian species. Isoln and proposed structure of ovine b-LPH: C. H. Li, Nature 201, 924 (1964); Y. Birk, C. H. Li, J. Biol. Chem. 239, 1048 (1964); C. H. Li et al., Nature 208, 1093 (1965); C. H. Li, Arch. Biol. Med. Exp. 5, 55 (1968); revised structure: Chretien et al., Int. J. Pept. Biophys. 5, 305 (1970). Isoln, characterization of bovine b-LPH: P. Lohmar, C. H. Li, Biochem. Biophys. Res. Commun. 77, 1088 (1977); of rat b-LPH: M. Rubinstein et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 74, 3052 (1977); of whale b-LPH: H. Kawauchi et al., Int. J. Pept. Protein Res. 15, 171 (1980); of turkey b-LPH: W. C. Chang et al., ibid. 261. Initial isoln, partial structure of human b-LPH: G. Cseh et al., FEBS Lett. 2, 42 (1968); eidem, ibid. 21, 344(1972). Isoln, characterization, amino acid sequence of human b-LPH: C. H. Li, D. Chung, Int. J. Pept. Protein Res. 17, 131 (1981).
