Literature References: Fixed oil expressed from chaulmoogra, the seeds of Taraktogenos kurzii King, Bixaceae; Hydnocarpus wightiana Blume or H. anthelmintica Pierre, Flacourtiaceae. The seeds contain about 50% chaulmoogra oil. Constit. Glycerides of chaulmoogric and hydnocarpic acids with small amounts of glycerides of palmitic acid, etc.
Properties: Yellow or brownish-yellow oil. Below 25° it is a soft solid; characteristic odor. About d2525 0.95; d1545 0.940. [a]D20 +48 to +60°. Sol in benzene, chloroform, ether, petr ether, slightly in cold alcohol; almost entirely sol in hot alcohol, carbon disulfide.

Therap-Cat: Antibacterial (leprostatic).
