Literature References: Prepd by adding finely powdered iodine to an excess of liq chlorine, which is then boiled away: Thomas, Depuis, Compt. Rend. 143, 282 (1906); Booth, Morris, Inorg. Properties: Long yellow or brownish needles or fluffy powder. Pungent, irritating odor. Corrosive to human skin. Must be stored in well closed amber glass bottles, preferably in refrigerator. d-4 3.203. mp ~33°. Volatile at room temp. mp 101° at 16 atm (pressure of its satd vapor). A pressure of 1 atm is reached at 64°. Complete decompn into ICl and Cl2 at 77°. Generally used as a 20 to 35% soln in concd HCl.

CAUTION: Concd solns are strongly irritating.
Use: Chlorinating and oxidizing agent.
