Literature References: Prepn: p-Nitrosodimethylaniline hydrochloride, obtained by reacting dimethylaniline and sodium nitrite, is condensed with 2,4-dinitrotoluene in the presence of sodium carbonate. The product, dinitrobenzylidene-p-aminodimethylaniline is split under steam agitation with HCl: Bennett, Bell, Org. Synth. coll. vol. II, 223 (1943).
Properties: Yellow to light brown crystals, mp 72°. bp10-20 190-210°. Freely sol in alc, ether, benzene, slightly sol in petr ether, water.
Melting point: mp 72°
Boiling point: bp10-20 190-210°
Use: In prepn of Schiff bases.
